Cephea cephea reaches 40cm in bell diameter and they are occasionally seen in Australian coastal waters in small numbers. This spectacular species is commercially harvested in China and Japan as a food source and for medicinal purposes.

Little research has been conducted on this species. The function of the ‘crown’ of projections on the bell is uncertain, though it is believed they contain stinging cells and may be used to catch prey.
